BULLEYS of TRUNCH
The first appearance of the Bulleys in Trunch that I have found so far is in the 1846 Trade Directory when Buckenham Bulley is listed as a blacksmith. The 1851 census shows that this was Buckenham Bulley senior who was born in Smallburgh.
Buckenham Bulley junior worked with his father as a blacksmith and by 1861 he had taken over the business. He was married to Phoebe and had a son William and a daughter Sarah - who seems to have had an interesting life.......
In the 1871 census Sarah Bulley was living with Thomas Fuller as his housekeeper but she had 2 illegitimate children using the surname Bulley. By 1881 she was still with Thomas and there were 5 more young children "boarding" with the surname Bulley. The 1911 census suggests that Thomas and Sarah did marry in 1883 and had further children - Thomas and Alfred Fuller. The other children took the surname Fuller in 1891 and 1901 but in 1911 only 3 children were acknowledged and Herbert gave the surname Bulley. So was Thomas Fuller their father, if not who was and if he was why didn't they get married earlier or why didn't the children take his name? A Trunch mystery - study of the Fuller family might throw more light on the subject.
Following on the family tradition, one of Sarah's illegitimate children - Sarah Ann, also had an illegitimate son, James, before she married Edward Smith.
There is a grave in the churchyard for Herbert Bulley, probably one of the children in the 1881 census return and in the new cemetery Eliza Bulley is buried, aged 82, probably the wife of William mentioned on the 1911 census.
At least two of the Bulleys left Trunch to find work with Albert (born 1868) working as a ship's carpenter in Jarrow in the early 1900s and William (born 1847) was working as a coachman in Devon in 1891.
