HICKS
The HICKS family were major landowners and farmers in Trunch for most of the 20th. Century. Walter (Wally) (1911-1982) is remembered in the village for opening up his home and garden at Gorrell Hill farm for many fund-raising events, including the village week in 1978. He was married to Annie FLAXMAN and they had 5 children and were keen Methodists. The newspapers contained some detailed accounts of the marriages of Harold and Herbert (Wally's brothers)
Walter's father was George William HICKS (1881-1963?) who was a farmer in Swanton Abbott before buying land in Trunch. The book "Return to Rural England" says that he bought Brick Kiln Farm in 1919 for £30 an acre but when farming profits declined two of his sons returned from Canada to replace hired workers and in 1930 his wife Ruth (nee Pike) took in paying visitors and grew fruit and vegetables to increase their income.
This photo was posted on Facebook and was said to be the Golden Wedding of George and Ruth
George's father was Thomas William Daniels HICKS (1850-1926) His mother was Sarah HICKS and he was born 6 months before she married Thomas DANIELS, so I think its probably fair to say that his father was Thomas DANIELS but he kept his mother's maiden name. Sarah lived in Felmingham with her parents Robert and Maria until her marriage. Thomas lived in Suffield and worked as a brick maker and then a farmer. He married Pamela Comer and they had 11 children including George.
