WARD
The two Marmaduke WARDS are interesting because although neither of them was Rector of Trunch, they were curates and clerks and were wealthy residents. There had been some WARDs living in Trunch from the 16th Century but I think that these ones came from Derbyshire. Marmaduke Senior (1710-1772) was the son of George and Elizabeth of Killimarsh in Derbyshire. He studied at St. Johns in Cambridge and held clerical appointments in Lincoln, Norwich and Suffolk before he became Rector of Swafield in 1746.
He was curate and clerk at Trunch during his time in Norwich. He married Ann Google of Trunch at Swafield in 1735 but she died in 1739. He them married Mary Buck in 1748 and they had at least 7 children, all baptised in Trunch. In his will he left property in Swafield and Trunch, mostly to his son Marmaduke and legacies of £500 each to his other 6 children as well as legacies to his servants - a wealthy man.

Marmaduke Junior (1751-1813) was Clerk in Trunch when Philip Gardner was the Rector of the combined churches of Trunch and Gimingham. He married Eleanor Smyth in 1782 and they had 7 children, all baptised in Trunch. They lived in Trunch Hall and farmed 89 acres. After Marmaduke died William REES a school master lived here and in 1834 he married Marmaduke's daughter Eleanor.
Of the other children; George joined the navy and died of a fever on board ship aged only 16, Harriet died aged 23, Mary married Henry Green, William joined the Royal Marines and died at sea aged only 21, Philip became a clergyman and married Nelson's daughter Horatia, while James joined the army, served in Canada and lived into his 60s receiving a pension.
