Farming and brewing Although the population in 1891 was slightly reduced, even more men were agricultural labourers (77) with 4 retired labourers and one yard/milkman. There were 10 working farms and one retired farmer. William Primrose Senior had died in 1882 and divided his lands between 4 of his sons. His other son ran the brewery and in 1891 there were 2 brewers, 2 spirit merchants, 3 brewer's labourers, 1 cellar-man, 1 drayman, 1 brewery book-keeper and 1 maltster living in the village.
Other occupations were 20 servants, 12 tailoresses/dressmakers, 5 grocers, 6 carpenters, 3 blacksmiths, 3 bricklayers, 3 vermin killers, 3 teachers, 2 innkeepers (+ 1 retired and a barman), 2 barbers, 2 butchers, 2 market gardeners, 2 gardeners, 2 preacher/rectors, and one each of the following:- engineer, shoemaker, charwoman, nurse, tile maker, carter, gamekeeper, brick maker, carriage builder, post master, laundress, carter, ostler and policeman.
Population mobility Although most people in the village were still born locally there were more people from further afield in Norfolk and 27 who were born outside of Norfolk. Eight of these were born in London, 4 in Suffolk, 3 in Durham, 3 in Kent, 3 in Cambridgeshire, 3 in Hampshire and 1 from each of Sussex, Berkshire and Liverpool.
