LOOSE
The LOOSE family have been living in Trunch for several generations. The first to arrive was Sidney Herbert LOOSE who was born in Erpingham in 1889. He was a farm worker and in 1939 he was living in Brewery Road with his family. He had married Daisy WEEDS in 1913 and they had at least 7 children. He died in Home Cottage below) in Front Street in 1976. When Sidney's birth was registered it was as Sydney Herbert LOOSE (RUDD) which gives a clue to the family history.
Walsingham Workhouse gate
Sidney's father was Robert Rudd LOOSE (1848-1921). In the census Robert gives his birthplace as Thursford and Great Snoring and in fact it was the Walsingham Union Workhouse, near to both those villages. His mother was Mary LOOSE, who was unmarried at the time of his birth. However she later married Robert RUDD and as Robert had the second name RUDD it is highly likely that Robert was his father although the younger Robert was using the surname LOOSE in the 1891 census. I have yet to trace Robert Rudd LOOSE in the census from 1871 or 1881.
Robert married Julia Susanna PATTERSON in 1883 in Walsingham and they had 8 children, with 6 of them still alive in 1911. Robert worked as a farm labourer in Erpingham and Ingworth, two villages near Aylsham.
Mary LOOSE (1826- after 1901) was born in Walsingham and her father was Leonard, a shepherd in Holkham and her mother Susannah. Leonard died between 1841 and 1851 and his widow lived out her life in Holkham with her children.
Of the more recent generations. Sidney's son Thomas, (1923 - 2022) married Doreen HARRIS in 1949 and they both worked on the land in Trunch. Their son Leslie and a grandson still live in the village.
